Objective:
Use the process of dying fabrics to illustrate chemical reactions, equilibrium, chemical bonding, and pH.
Pre-Lab Questions:
1.) Where did the art of dying fibers originate?- In China or India, no later then 2500 B.C.
2.) Originally, what type of substances where used to dye?
- Natural dyes, such as bark, berries, flowers, leaves, cochineal and roots.
3.) What are the fibers of the shirt made of?
- Long strands of cellulose molecules, all twisted together, cotton and oxygen hydrogen (OH).
4.) What chemical interaction is occurring when fibers are dyed?
- Ionic bonding.
Data:
1.) Write down a synopsis of what occurred before the dyeing of the shirt.- Well, my synopsis is since I did this lab at home, i had newspaper along my kitchen table and my glasses, and gloves.
2.) Explain the process used to dye your shirt - pattern, tying method.
- Step 1: I soaked my cloth in hot water for about 5 minutes.
- Step 2: I took my cloth out the pot I was using and wrong it out. I twirled the shirt in the pattern I wanted and out the rubber bands on the shirt.
- Step 3: I put my gloves on and began to dye.
- Step 4: After that I put my shirt into a plastic bag and left it there for 24 hours.
- Step 5: I opened the bag and took out my shirt and rinse it out with warm water. Then I removed the rubber bands and rinsed the shirt a couple more times. I hanged dried it in my basement.
3.) After the shirt sat for 24 hours, describe the pattern of the shirt - picture, if possible.
- After my shirt sat for 24 hours, the pattern of the shirt came out better than I expected it to. It was like the bullseye pattern.
Post Lab Questions:
1.) If you dyed a rainbow spiral on a shirt and then soaked it in a black dye bath, the result would be a black shirt with a rainbow spiral patter. Why doesn't the entire shirt dye black?- The entire shirt doesn't dye black because the hydrogen in the shirt has already been used to make the rainbow colors. So whatever hydrogen not used would turn black.
2.) What is the purpose of soaking the shirts in the hot water for 5 minutes?
- The purpose of soaking the shirt was to get the colors you wanted more vibrantly and it helps the color travel further, faster.
3.) Why is 100% cotton the best type of cloth to use with fiber reactive dyes?
- Using 100% cotton is the best because fiber reactive dyes react well with cellulose under high pH conditions, in the presence of sodium carbonate so it has a brilliant outcome on the color(s) you want.
- Some advantages are they're good to wash, easy to use, low on harmful chemicals and great colors.
5.) Explain how ionic bonding is used to dye the shirts in this lab.
- The fabric is like a long carbon chain, and along the carbon chain are these OH's. Then you ass a base and it removes the hydrogen ions. When this happens you're left with a bonding site (O-). Now it's ready to except the dye (dye+). The dye combines onto thread.
